Weekend recap – Murph, shopping & some living history

Hi there!

Have you recovered from the long weekend? Did you have to go back to work yesterday?

Tuesdays after a long weekend are the WORST!

Yes, I’m aware it’s Wednesday and yes, it really should be Wine Wednesday but hey, things happen.

So, Wine Wednesday has been canceled this week.

Oh, um, I mean, feel free to drink wine without me. 😉

So, Saturday was my first Memorial Day Murph workout.

If you’re not familiar, Murph is the workout in honor of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. From the CrossFit page: “This workout was one of Mike’s favorites and he’d named it “Body Armor.” From here on, it will be referred to as “Murph” in honor of the focused warrior and great American who wanted nothing more in life than to serve this great country and the beautiful people who make it what it is.”

LT Michael Murphy

The workout is as follows:

1 mile run

100 pull ups
200 push ups
300 air squats

1 mile run

(the pull ups, push ups and squats may be broken down any way we chose)

There were about 80 people that showed up at the box on Saturday so they broke us into 4 heats. I was in heat 3.

I’ll tell you what – I really felt like I should have been doing something watching heats 1 and 2 working away while waiting for our start time!

Finishing up the first mile

I finished in 56:55.

I broke it up into 5/5/5/5/5/5.

5 pull ups/5 squats/5 push ups/5 squats/5 push ups/5 squats

Got through 14 rounds before I had to use a band for my pull ups. (psst – that’s 70 pull ups without a band!!!)  Amazingly enough, my hands didn’t shred but they were bleeding a little. Yeah, explain that one!

Afterwards, there was a BBQ at the home of one of the athletes. There was LOTS of bacon!

On Sunday, my body realized what I had done on Saturday and rejected the idea of me getting out of bed.

So, we – meaning me – took it easy and didn’t do much.

Except for when we went out and BOUGHT A NEW REFRIGERATOR!!!

Delivery is Friday!!!!

ren stimpy

I totally would have carried it out of the store except for, well, it’s heavy and my pecs hurt and I was pretty sure my legs weren’t going to stand for it.

So, delivery it is.

Have I ever mentioned that I’m impatient?

Is it Friday yet?

On Monday, we went back in time with a trip to Colonial Williamsburg.

They were offering free admission to all active and retired military servicemembers and their families, as well as to veterans with a copy of their DD-214.

That’s such an amazing deal!!!

The weather was beautiful, there were plenty of people but it wasn’t overly crowded, and we had a lovely time.

Our favorite part was watching them make bricks for a building project they are working on.

I’ll share photos once we have the time to get them off the SD card and on to the computer. 🙂

We ended the day with some wine tasting at the Williamsburg Winery.  Because, you KNOW I never turn down an opportunity to taste some wine. 🙂

Talk to me: What did you do over the weekend? Did you participate in Murph? Did you take advantage of any excellent sales? Are you impatient?

Jumping high in tall socks :)

Hello, hello!

Happy Thursday before a 3-day weekend!!

long weekend

So, I’m in full swing at my new CrossFit box and let me tell you what, I am totally LOVING it there.

Last night, we started with some skill work – I worked on overhead squats with a 15 pound bar, air squats, stretched my hip flexors, and worked on my handstand holds.

I held one for about 10 seconds!!!

Then, for the WOD, we did a 2k row for time.

We pulled the rowers outside because it was beautiful. Man, I wish I’d taken a picture!

I finished in 8:53.

I’m meh about my time. I know I can do better.

Then, we worked on max height box jumps *3 attempts.

I got to 28″!!!!

It had to be the socks. 😉

Remember back when I was injured and couldn’t jump?

Remember how excited I was when I jumped 24″ for the first time?

Well, last night I actually pulled off 3 jumps at 28″!

I failed at 30″ because my brain got the better of me but, next time, I’ve got it. 🙂

Oh, and to top it all off, these box jumps came one day after this workout….

…in which I did all 30 jumps at 24″.

Tonight, we do “Helen” – 3 rounds of 400m run, 21 kettlebell swings, 12 pull-ups.

I’m really looking forward to it! Especially the running part.

I haven’t been out for a run (besides warm-ups) since Flying Pig.

We’ll incorporate running into my training plan starting next month. 🙂

Talk to me: Do you have any big plans for the long weekend? Are you going to any barbecues? Is your box doing “Murph” on Saturday or Monday?

We’re doing ours on Saturday. My sailor has agreed to come take some pictures! 🙂

Mile Repeats and Motivation

It’s Track Tuesday!

I got there at o dark 30 because I knew I had mile repeats on my schedule.

peaceful morning

peaceful morning

I was the only one there!

OH! And it was 56 degrees this morning!

So. Fabulous.

Running and cool weather are best buds.

So, I started off with a mile warm-up jog.

Which I needed. Because it was chilly!

What? It was like 90 degrees with 100% humidity on Saturday?! Don’t judge me.

Then, I did my 8 burpees.

Have you done yours?

Mile 1 – 7:42

Mile 2 – 7:43

Mile 3 – 7:38

Okay, not really.

But still, week 3 of marathon training after coming back from an injury?

Yeah, I was leaving smoke trails. 🙂

Let me tell you a little bit about those burpees today.

Remember yesterday?  Murph?

Um, yeah.

My entire body aches.

Running felt great on my legs but my upper body?

I almost didn’t get out of bed this morning.

I was snuggling with a very cute little kitty.

She was warm.

But, I got up anyway.

Because I wanted to run.

I love running. And endorphins. And food. I really really love food.

Question: How do you motivate yourself to work out when you’re tired and want to skip/stay in bed/be lazy?
